Norman R. Sorensen is Chairman of the International Advisory Council of Principal Financial Group (NYSE:PFG). Previously, Sorensen was Chairman-International and President & CEO of Principal International from 1998-2012. Prior to Principal, he was a senior executive at American International Group (NYSE:AIG) from 1989-1998. Prior to joining AIG, he held a number of senior international marketing and general management positions at Citigroup (NYSE:C) from 1984-89, and at American Express Company (NYSE:AMX) from 1972-84.

Sorensen has extensive experience developing and growing global consumer and institutional markets for financial services products with a focus on Latin America, Europe and Asia. Among his global responsibilities, he led the Company’s efforts to liaise with the Brazilian, Chilean, Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and Mexican Governments on those countries’ Pension Reform projects at all levels of public and private sector policy. Outside Principal, Sorensen is a director of Sara Lee Corporation (NYSE:SLE) and a director of Encore Capital Group (Nasdaq:ECPG). He also serves on the Insurance Advisory Board of Pitney-Bowes Business Insights (NYSE:PBI). He is the chairman of the International Insurance Society (IIS); a member of the Financial Services Roundtable (FSR); a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), and a former Chairman of the U.S. Coalition of Service Industries (CSI). Sorensen has appeared before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee at hearings on the U.S.- China Economic Relationship, before the Senate Finance Committee at hearings on the U.S. free trade agreements with Chile and Singapore, before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Trade at hearings on The Future of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and before the WTO Council in Geneva at hearings on The Future of the Doha Round of Trade Liberalization.

Sorensen, who speaks Spanish, Portuguese, German and French, is a Chemical Engineering graduate of the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) and of Columbia University’s Executive Program for International Managers.
